Examples for Advantages
1) Space utilization -A business such as Google or Microsoft may use hot desking to optimize workspace and suit various work preferences. Because of this versatility, workers can select workplaces that best fit their needs, be it quiet areas for concentrated work or group projects requiring collaboration.
A 2022 study by Global Workplace Analytics found that hot desking is an affordable option for managing office space for firms, since it can lower real estate expenditures by as much as 30% (Global Workplace Analytics, 2022).
2) Encourage collaboration -By combining teams and dismantling organizational silos, hot desking encourages impromptu interactions and collaboration in tech businesses like Slack and Dropbox. Engaging with employees from different fields can result in creative achievements.
In 2023, the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) conducted a survey in which 64% of the organizations using hot desking reported an increase in cross-departmental contact (IFMA, 2023).
Examples for Disadvantages
1) lack of Privacy - Not having a personal workstation can irritate workers at a financial company like JPMorgan Chase. Lack of a customized desk might make it more difficult to feel at ease and involved, which may have an effect on output and job satisfaction.
According to an Employee Experience Institute survey from 2023, the absence of personalization in hot desking situations made 48% of workers feel less engaged and productive (Employee Experience Institute, 2023).
2) Difficulty in finding place - During peak hours, workers in a busy design agency like IDEO may find it difficult to find available workstations, which could cause disruptions to their work. This can be especially difficult in offices with a lot of foot activity or varying employee counts.
According to a research in the Journal of Environmental Psychology (2023), 38% of employees in hot desking settings had trouble locating a desk, which made it harder for them to get started on their work quickly.
Conclusion
Although hot desking can improve cooperation and space efficiency while providing flexibility, there are drawbacks including less customization and possible disruptions. Because of some disadvantages for some people hot desking may not be convenient. But with the type of work, the office setting and personal preferences all affect how effective hot desking is. How well these elements are handled and managed will determine how successful hot desking is as businesses embrace hybrid work models.
